By far the most interesting find to date out at a mates clothesline on his parents property who built a home on an old dairy location. House was erected after pre decs, modern coins only but got a silver spoon handle and then this little beauty on a solid 83 readout at nearly 9 inches in very mild and damp soil. Going back to have a real hunt. Anyone care to give this a quick grade? Sorry for the pics, the rams head is by far the better side, pretty good condition for a soil coin I thought, which leaves me to wonder what else is waiting to be jagged.

Nice find GT - the condition from a coin collecting perspective is not great. The wear on the obverse of George's head is significant with not a lot of detail left and the reverse also shows a bit of wear - using the grading system of good/very good/fine / very fine / almost uncirculated / uncirculated / proof - I would give it a "very good" condition rating.

The early 1940s silver coins were minted in various locations - your coin was minted in San Francisco - and I believe the coins minted in the USA were plentiful so it is not a rare date. (S mint mark appears on reverse of coin under the rams bust)

Cleaning the coin with anything more than soapy water ruins any numismatic (collectors) value and it is worth the spot price for silver - which is approx $3 AUS today...

I would rather find a shilling than a $1 and $2 coin though... ;)

Thank you mate I don't seem to get too many war era silvers from the ground. 16 million I think for the s mark shilling, relatively common. Shame about George I must say it came rams head up and very clean took a little wash to clean the other side, and it was a bit of a let down, there's some shallow skinny slide scratches in parallel on George side, but nice to get an objective opinion. They really did make beautiful coins before the change, thanks again.
