Even as a fake (if that's the case) it's still a bloody ripper find erfect: :beer: For the minted age it's definitely 18th century :Y: and it's yours and maybe the only one in existence ower:

Mackka is correct, Queen Victoria's reign began in the first half of the 19th century and ended at the beginning of the 20th (20 June 1837 22 January 1901).

Bushpig, you could spray away any dirt from around the date with a bit of metho... then do a nice clear close-up for us.

So it doesn't look like it could be the original 1831 die.... the three looks like it comes from the 81-83 era

And the heads side fits from that era good

The coin expert stated it's a 1881.

I would get another opinion. If it was 1881 then the 2 eights would look identical and they don't in my opinion.

How can it be a Queen Victoria shilling in 1831 when she did not become Queen until 1837?

Which should mean more coin $$$$$$ value :Y: maybe that's the reason for the valuers appraisal, did the valuer offer to buy it.

If it is an error coin, is it possible that its a one of a kind and if its part of a larger circulation wouldnt there be some record of their existence in the coin collectors valuation books etc.
Im not trying to cast light against its authenticity, I hope the finder makes a mozza but its just odd there appears to be no recognition of its existence.
To my eye it reads 1831 but it dont compute with her reign.

Yes you're correct, I'd like to think it is an error but considering it does look like an 8 with a piece missing from it the expert is more than likely right.
It's a very nice conversation piece for sure. :Y:
