Hi mate. I won't be too much help as I'm from Vic as well, but I was at a work thing in Brisbane last week and talking to a guy from Newcastle and it just happened to come up that I had started detecting as a hobby. Anyway, it turned out that he had also been into it, but hadn't done much for the past few years because he has a young family. I asked if there much gold up Newcastle way and he said that he always had success out at Tamboroora (check my spelling of it), which was about a 4 hour drive. Sorry, that's all I've got. Maybe try the Localities section of this board.

Another great day out in the goldfields - arrived at location early afternoon. On arrival I pretty much hit off where I left the last time I was out at this area. 16 out of 17 times visiting this area and gold on each occasion except for 1 - starting to get that good mapping on google earth for each gold find to help with a pattern of deposits within the area.

In 17 visits as mentioned 16 have produced gold finds - some days have been 1 piece on the day and another was 26 pieces, In total at this area I have pulled out over 120 pieces in the time spent here.

The first target for the day was a small piece of rust sitting pretty much in surface mulch.

When I cleared an area of a mid size fallen tree - and cleaned away any broken small branches and the usual compost mulch type matter. I hit a nice little signal very easy to distinguish as a target - but not too loud. Good sign it was not surface and a few inches below.

1. See in these pictures the cleared area - and the amount of sticks that were sitting right through this low lying area.

2. Here you can see the hole - pretty exciting stuff Hah - just a plain old hole - a pick sitting in it to show depth - some red clay, target finally out - gets better trust me :) - thought I would share these pics anyway.

3. And there we are target acquired and in the hand, good old kinder surprise - told you it gets better guys, always great to see the final target when you crack the clay open. It was sounding loud more on one side and I kept rubbing the material away to hopefully expose the gold - or the target I should say. After 5 minutes I wasn't really making much progress - just thought It might have been a better picture - it got the better of me so I cracked it in half. And there we are right in the middle.

After searching some more in and around this area - I pulled out a piece of lead and a rusty nail, maybe 5 meters away from this target in another area that I cleaned and made those close to ground windows I hit another signal - indeed it was a nice target - very faint but definitely a solid. This target when It was unearthed and in hand I tell you that I needed to look really close and give this one a rub.

4. Here again you can see another hole - pretty exciting yeah? Pick in there so you can establish a form of depth - this ground was clay from the very top with very minimal gravels mixed through - it went from red clay to chocolate brown - now this one gets a lot better than the first target of gold. I was wondering what the hell it was when it was first in hand. Doesnt happen often when you pull Gold out and you need to look twice

5. I should have taken a photo before I rubbed it - there were no clear visible signs of yellow - it was red/orange and looked like a copper color. After I rubbed the orange there gold started to show. pretty cool specimen this one - looks to be ironstone inclusion - I was looking forward to cleaning this when arriving home.

6. And there we are a semi clean after arriving home - the specimen looks pretty unique with the orange copper color still on the gold, when I cleaned it I tried to expose the gold to highlight the piece, also trying not to affect the ironstone inclusions - also signs of little pieces of quartz mixed through the ironstone. I might clean some more later on and see how it looks. Just thought to show these images before another cleaning. Always good to capture this type of a find and share with you all.

MG I love your pictures and the description of your hunt. Makes one a little envious really. Good work keep em coming.

Thanks Wishfull,

Taking the camera is great - helps to capture anything on the day - even if it's not yellow always good to have some images to reflect on. And I think it also helps to break up the day between and during the digs, helping to keep that pure calmness and joy of the day and relax as well.

Sometimes we all need to break up the monotony of constant digging of holes. At the end of the day I might not have covered as much of an area or dug less holes from the time taken, but in saying this at the end of the day I feel like I have accomplished a good day either way - because I will take home either Photo's and Junk - or Photo's Gold and Junk

Another good day and post MG that's a strange colour little piece but that's its charm and make it special .

Yeah this piece definitely hasnt seen much of a tumbling over its days - otherwise the gold would be bright - the outer layer on the gold in the area's would be the color from the ironstone mass where it came from - getting closer to the source.

I wise man once said persistence pays off ;)

Back on the hunt again today - I want to take you all on a journey, if you patiently read through this post you will see exactly what I mean. Well it all started when I stumbled out of bed this morning and made my usual morning coffee. I was sitting there thinking for a while do I go back out to the previous spot where I have had a lot of success in the last 17 times in visiting there - or do I stay local and push through the thick bushland with the tussock weed.

The thought was made to travel and hit the area hoping that I would continue the streak in my finds, as it stands now the goal has been well and truly passed for continuous gold finds in one location, the previous streak was 8 times in a row or 8 days in a row in one area. This new spot has proven to be quite the area, very shallow and indeed hitting the good stuff everyday for 17 straight days. Well could it be that today was going to be any different - are the targets becoming to be less frequent.

When I arrived today - the flies were at their worst again - as many would know if you were all out in the fields today. As I arrived at this spot after a good 1.5km walk through the bush, I was again focusing on any area's within this line of gold that I have found, the area would stretch 150-200mtrs in length and roughly 50 or so meters in width - with the Gold being deposited across this section. It is a reasonable size area to spend 17 days and hit it every time, now today was one of those days where I just had to keep persisting.

I walked through this area at certain spots which I knew that I had not swung the coil in, moved many sticks, kicked a lot of stones/rocks out of the way. Pleanty of water breaks in between and nothing - nothing at all not even a little piece of rust. It is ok when you dig a few things but when you hit absolutely nothing in 2 hours - very annoying.

Not to worry eventually I knew I would have to get at least one target to dig, and there it was not promising but a target to dig, 1 foot deep in very loose material shotgun shell. At last finally had the first target for the day, so I battled on and again nothing for another 2 hours and then hit 2 small targets. Rust and Lead, finally another couple to dig. By this time the water was almost depleted and sun was nearing the hillside. I ventured away from this area that has proven to be an excellent gold producing spot. And walked a line through the bush with no clear direction or plan in mind just wandering detecting and sighting anything new on the grounds.

I walked all the way around one side of this gold spot at least 50 meters away then I walked back around the top section where I had first made the initial discovery - now I am almost ready to head home and walked to the complete opposite side of this gold area.

Previously when I first discovered the gold here, I focused on the area and line which majority of the gold I was finding, after google earth documenting the finds everyday it just kept me going back and continuing the line because the mapping was showing the line and pattern to follow. I have not swung the coil on the right hand side of this area - basically if you draw a rectangle which is the gold spot, I have focused on this rectangle and the left side of the rectangle - now time for the right hand side.

Days almost done and nothing in hand but at least I had those targets in between - not too many targets but it is way better to dig something than nothing at all.

On the way back around the top of this area again like I mentioned walked in and along the top of an old mullock, pretty much heading away back to the vehicle and there we are a target in some dirt an old miner had pulled out. This is almost at the top right but out of the zone which the gold has been found so far.

I wasnt too confident on this target but it still pulled me up just enough to inspect,

1. And there we are - a signal pulled out roughly 6 inches below - very loose broken up red clay / dirt = not the usual thick clays but more like red dirt mixture. Not much of anything in the material either - no gravels etc. I actually thought this one was going to be a little rust bugget. Only because I have had many of these targets in this material pulled from a mullock and majority is those rusty nail type objects - always good to dig and verify no matter what - it was one of those moments you know how you get really good ground and many times you just know or at least have a good feeling, complete opposite here, it was one of those "oh its gold" type of moments.

2. All cleaned and looks like a little pot of gold.
1481449401_pic_0134.jpg

3. Also when I arrived home after being out for 6 or so hours, I wanted to crush and pan a sample - been too busy to do the samples from the hole of gold lately - but have taken the loams - and this was from one pan from another section of the Calcrete. So far in each pan sample from the centre of the hole and the pan sample to the left and to the right has still shown colors in each pan. Just need to crush and sample pan the top centre/left/right and bottom /centre/left/right

So now I can add to my goals of being 17/18 days. Lucky on this one - I might have that little break on this area just to break it up a bit so next time visiting I will be in full force. Sometimes we need that break from an area just to spur us on again.

All the best and enjoy.

Hi All,

Just updating thread with some findings - nothing yesterday as I had other commitments and didnt make it out bush - and weather was a bit warm anyway, As for today still a bit on the warm side but enough to get out and have 2 1/2 hours on the machine.

I went to a local spot which I have been before, just to be out in the fields and hearing that first buzz when you power on the machine. The area where I went to was a spot that I have never ran the coil over but i know the grounds/area very well, the section has very hot ground and smooths out where the layers change to a more of a gravel wash sitting on a clay layer. The grounds are an average depth of 10 inches gravels to the clay layer

As I continued along with no targets at all, this is that ground where it is super quiet or not much trash I should say, very frequent rust and lead.

As I walked along sitting right on top of the ground an old tomahawk head.

When I arrived home also crushed some more samples from section 1 in the recent hole of Gold found in that Calcrete - got another 5 colors/pickers in a small pan load.

Looking forward to tomorrow and the majority of the week - weather change looking to be back to low 20's

If anyone knows of someone looking for the following coils - I dont need them anymore and have never used them since purchasing my detector, only used the 18" Once to go over one section for about 10 minutes. Just havent listed them for sale yet. I only use my 14" Coiltek DD Pro

Coiltek 11" DD
Coiltek 14" Anti Interference
Coiltek 18" DD
Standard Minelab 11" DD

Thanks - will post up any findings throughout the week

Back on the hunt, as mentioned in earlier posts taking a short break since Sunday at the area where I have had some luck, hitting that pocket of gold in Calcrete and working mostly the left side of the very slight incline. I was back out there today in full force ready to swing away on the right hand side.

I arrived at the area around 2:30pm and the weather was just superb for prospecting, enough to be warm and the cool breeze when digging away. Not many flies around which is a bonus.

When I first started it was pretty much at the very top of this area - well to me it is the top directly adjacent to the left side of the other area. I cleaned a section down around a big circle hole, fired up the detector and was running great just that nice threshold humming away. Not the slightest little chatter

After swinging away for roughly 15 minutes I had the first target - about 2 inches down and screamed away - it was a .22 Lead

I continued to work my way around these mullocks/test holes just to see if there were any pieces pulled up and missed by the old timers. I wasnt expecting much because the test holes were roughly 5 to 6 feet deep. And the ground was giving me nothing at all, I still continued along these larger deep test holes working around and down the incline and the workings began to shallow out to roughly 2 feet depth - and I was noticing the ground as I continued to focus on material above and ground level.

Almost to the area which I believed would be the more promising area, which is pretty much shallow ground almost looked to be surfaced up into mullocks rather than test holes

As I slid the coil up towards a tree on the upper side of a test hole, there was another signal much like the previous - very loud but a smooth solid signal. Out with the camera and time for the pics.

1. Here in these images you can see the area near the tree, scraped away the top soils, and you can also see the material has been previously removed from the miners. Again as I continued further down I was expecting this target to be 3 or 4 inches - but it turned out to be below the top soils and in with the clays and some rocks - its hard to see the depth but it was roughly 10 inches

2. Target in the hand and as soon as I opened my hand pretty easy to see what this target was, bit surprised as it was the second target for today and in the first half hour. Always good to start this way.

3. As I continued on cleaning away kicking sticks and anything that would stop me from getting the best depth - I had some pretty good finds along the way. finding some signals that were so faint even a gust of wind would stop anyone from hearing them. And these signals were probably only heard as I continued forwards moving away sticks and junk on the ground. The two I am talking about were roughly 1 foot deep and 2 rust nuggets - very very faint - and I removed away 80mm or so of compost across the top of the ground. Got some other exciting finds as well - absolute screamer of a piece roughly 1 inch deep it is the top right on this below image.
These are all of the other targets dug for the remainder of today - no more yellow but indeed some excellent targets - kept me going and better to dig something than nothing.
1481708598_pic_0199.jpg

4. When I returned home - took the pics of the junk and then cleaned the gold - looks good, still has some extra cleaning needed - I think it might be clay with possibly ironstone. Also the piece of gold looks like it has a crack in the centre where it is bent - not sure if the old timers bent it while they were digging away.

MG your ability to detail your adventures is a talent not to mention your knowledge, hard earned no doubt. A skill developed with attention to detail it seems, Thank you for sharing.

Well done MG. You are truly inspirational. You certainly show the work you put in, persistence, and sticking to sound practice to find the gold you find. I'm sure most without your commitment would go home empty handed, me inclusive. But I truly feel you are inspiring a new work ethic and practice in me. Can't wait to get out just after Xmas and put it in to practice. Thanks

Thanks Dig'n-it,

Hopefully your Xmas break is well rewarded with a nice chunk of the good stuff, or many pieces for that matter.

As for strategy its always great to adopt some extra's to improve the potential opportunity.

I just calculated the distance walked in and out of this area in the last 19 times visiting it, since 10th October 2016 - I have walked 57km in and out - 1.5km in and 1.5km out - thats not including the distance for meticulously covering the grounds. Would hate to think of all of the many Km's just in prospecting

Definitely keeps us actively fit - not that I need it - not a big fella and definitely dont need to lose any thats for sure.

All the best

MG. It's that exercise that I also love about the hobby. I'm a bit older than you and slowing up, but walking for many hours and digging is a great low impact exercise. Certainly helps you sleep at night. Also great for relaxation and clearing the mind of life's everyday burdens. Gold detecting ticks so many boxes.
I've just started to think where I will detect. So many places where I've found little bits to go back over in my mind and think about what did I miss, is there more gold there, plus new places I have already got mapped out to try. Too much to choose from. But it is good fun thinking bout it.
Cheers
