Quartz - you should always quote hardness, it is easy to determine (7 for quartz).

Went for a scratch in Retreat creek The Gemfields qld, wuz lookin for sapphires with no luck, then tripped over this fist size cooked rock. Gave it the vinegar soak.. Any ideas on what to use next. When it is cleaner I am hoping to see some sparkle in the small cavities, with the possibility of cutting in half and finding a geode.
Never been disappointed when out scratching, pink quartz, mica in quartz, black and brown quartz like a licorice allsort. keep the nose to the ground and something will jump out atcha
Soak in Diggers Deck Cleaner from most hardware stores - you don't find it with Methylated Spirits and the other Diggers products, usually in aisle 23 in Bunnings. I think I got mine in Mitre 10 in Emerald.
I was asked by a neighbour to see if I could get some info on these two rocks. I thought this forum was the right place to come. They were picked up from an old tin mine near The Archer River in NQ. They are pretty weighty and have a sheen on them where they are the smoothest. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers Sorry the clarity isnt the best.
:Y: I thought it looked like iron stone but the weight was what made me question. Might have to crack it open. Some good info in that book. Im a real fan of the coen area. Cheers guys
Could someone help me identify this? I was told by the person that gave it to me that its a sapphire but I would just like to know for sure It is around 180mm x 140mm
