    something got me thinking

Lets look at it from a generalised economical & legislative stand point. Small miners are normally a person or company operating under a Prospecting Licence (PL) Mining activity. - Open Cut - Alluvial Gold - 5Ha pegged or 50,000 sq M (maximum allowable land parcel under a PL) - Crown land...

Prospecting / Miners pick information and questions

Don't get me wrong not saying plough disc's are no good, just saying they are hard to find and harder to get people to part with them. Leaf springs on the other hand are a dime a dozen. Unless your using parabolic leafs they should already have a curve in them.

    Sneak peak

Nice work, looks like your guy likes his form rollers :) I think the hopper set up is fantastic! very original, leaves plenty of room for grizzly bars in the upper while keeping the overall height low. Never seen riffles in any of the Launders I've built or fixed just a ton of rubber lining...

Prospecting / Miners pick information and questions

Forget plough disc's they are highly sort after for heaps of projects. Use old leaf springs they will out last most prospectors. As a side note put a wooden handle on it steel handles transfer vibration into your forearm which will hurt you over time.

    GPZ7000 release, questions and information

Seems it's all about the depth on the gpz, 40% more depth over a 5k conditions dependant. I'm no expert however I do know the difference between waving your detector over known target in fresh dug soil/air and searching in the bush on compacted ground. I'll go out on a limb and say most will...

Are big nuggets only found on private property?

    I guess I got a bit over excited with the can because I pinged 1 x 5 gm and 3 x 1.5 - 2 gm 10 feet from the spot.

Ophir gold, near Orange NSW information and questions

Better late than never. I've worked further west south of Nygan and Cobar. There are plenty of old timers workings out there so worth a shot. A good rule of thumb is if there are or were commercial gold mines and old timers workings in the area there is gold.

Are big nuggets only found on private property?

Funny you mention tin cans, I was out the out the day in a area known to locals. Picked up the faintest of signals so started digging, 2 feet later the detector is giving a huge signal but not going into over load. I'm thinking this is going to be huge! turns out to be a ally coke...

Metal detecting for gold in the Alice Springs area.

Tamami is where most of the NT gold is. I used to work at Tanami Gold now owned by Newcrest, the airleggers were picking 20 grammers out of the reefs. I personally saw 20L buckets of nuggets being run up the decline. The Tanami desert is one of the most remote parts of Aust. a Sat phone is a must!

    Ore Extraction

Sounds like you've already settled on a self tipping hoist DWT. Manual drive only it would have to be a ratchet winch either a full circle or push pull lever, that way you can have a secondary brake system if the ratchet fails. Geared reduction boat winches are reasonably cheap and available...

Trommel over sluice is the way to go IMO

    Ore Extraction

I'd go bucket chain. Continuous feed as long as you can keep the hopper full. Too many issues with a auger plus you have to crush & screen UG. I don't like self tippers, low maintenance but so much more to go wrong. However if you can crush & screen UG and have water available make a slurry...
