    Happy New Year!

You never have to ask a prospector about what their New Year’s wish is. They are all the same.

    Relic found

Could it be an old type press stud or snap button. Looks a bit larger than the ones i have on one of my shirts in place of buttons. They were also used, I believe, in leather work or military clothing which may have justified a more decorative finish rather than the metal or pearl studs found on...

    SDC2300 Batteries and Chargers

Have no use for those I posted a photo of in “What I bought today”. You would be welcome to them. PM if you are interested. Regards Geoff.

    Today I BOUGHT

That is the lithium battery pack for the 2300. The battery is a sealed unit and reference to the pack would probably mean that lithium compatible chargers would be included, as they should be, with the battery. I stand to be corrected, but I think it probably has two 18650 lithium cells enclosed...

    Today I BOUGHT

Christmas coming up so decided it was time to join the 6000 club. Thanks guys at Lucky Strike, Geelong for the deal. Still hanging on to my 5000 though and pretending this is a present for my wife.

Need help identifying a find please

Would help with a location. The black piece of rock attached could be country rock (not the musical kind but the matrix rock in which the quartz reefs formed). Knowing the geology of the area might give some clue as to what that country rock is and maybe what the mineralization might also be.

    Greetings

Finding shotgun pellets with your equinox is a sign that your skills as a detector operator are good and I think the main reason you are not finding gold is just not having the right machine. Maybe it is asking a bit too much to hope that the equinox will do the job of both a relic hunter and...

Is this gold? My son found it smashing rocks at Kenilworth.

Hard to say from a photograph, but when I zoom in, the yellow bit appears to resolve itself more like a mineral crystal that glistens. Gold will have an even yellow colour that doesn’t glisten. If you know someone with a metal detector, if it were gold it should give off a decent metallic...

    Victorian Turquoise

If you go into the Mindat website and type in Turquoise from Victoria it will give you some more specific location information and other data. Whether access to these sites is available now is another thing.

    G'day

Hi Raz and welcome. yes the public perception and reality of prospecting can be vastly different. Access to the best areas where chunks of gold can be easily got can be difficult and the TV shows don’t convey the paperwork and issues that must be dealt with before that access can be obtained...

    Pay Dirt - Reliable Supplier

Are there any issues sending bags of unpasteurized dirt by mail especially between states or countries, given bio security laws? Seems Kiwi Gold actually state that their paydirt is unprocessed paywash from their claim seeded with the guaranteed amount of gold. At the very worst if you could...

    ⭐ Gold Detecting Show'n Tell

Rain stopped today and prevailed on the good woman to stay another day in Maryborough. Long day‘s work but managed to push the total up to just over three and a half grams. Picture includes yesterday’s haul. Biggest bit was just under a gram. Pretty knackered now but happy with the total and...

    ⭐ Gold Detecting Show'n Tell

Sitting in the van waiting for the weather to clear so can go out and detect in the mud at Maryborough. At least got a few tiddlers with the 5 yesterday and earlier today before the worst of the wet weather came in. This will most likely be “all she wrote”.

    Aurora Australis

The good news is that the maximum of the sun’s 11 year activity cycle won’t be reached until late 2024. This relates to the intensity of sun spots and solar storms the outpourings of which when encountered by the earth in its orbit cause the aurora. So it is likely that there will be plenty...

    Can you identify this.

Permanent match. Had one in my younger days. Having a cool cigarette lighter was a thing back then to show off, although seem to remember these were more for campers.

Selling gold - how, why, where

Depends what you are giving. Property, shares and some other assets may attract capital gains tax at the time of gifting or transfer. If you are in receipt of a pension there are also limits on how much you can gift per year without consequence to your asset test So would depend on personal...

What are YOU doing right NOW

Ants going crazy today up at Dunolly. Swarming everywhere with the wet weather. Digging a muddy wet target, got them up my pants The clouds opened up just at that moment and forced a quick retreat back to the car. Having to stand out in the rain whilst attempting to dislodge the critters from...

Minelab GPX5000 - So much more to learn

Would agree that there is heaps to learn about the 5000. Operators, including me, need to spend much more time more time understanding the effects that timings and audio controls and systems have on target signal recognition. When I got my first 5000, I was guilty after finding a few bits of...

New to the forum and to Gold

Thanks Geoff. That makes it easier to provide an opinion. The rock specimen appears to be a granite and one of the common minerals in granite is a common variety of mica known as Muscovite. This can often have a yellow or golden appearance. It is a light flakey mineral. Its SG <3.0 would make it...
