Yep, flip flops or thongs.
Flip Flops never.
Thongs forever.
The thong style of footwear were first seen in images of Egyptians making them in pharaonic times, but were never called thongs or flip flops for that matter. They have been produced by many other cultures as well, Indian, Japanese etc.
As far as I can tell the word thong was first used in describing the modern version consisting of a soft rubber soled sandal with dual rubber straps merging into a single strap which goes between the toes and secured by knobs on the underside. Inherent in that description is the ability of thongs to be cheaply mass produced and also in a wide variety of colours and even patterns.
My wife can remember buying her first pair of thongs (footwear) in 1959 although I am pretty sure they were around a fair while before then. The word "thong" to describe what the rest of the world choose to call "flip flops" has a long history.
The term flip flop had been in limited use before but rather to describe a type of slip-on flat sandal with a flat strap across the instep.
Following patenting by Dunlop of the little knobs that hold the straps in place and mass marketing, the word thong to describe the modern version became common around the world particularly in outdoorsy type cultures such as Pacific USA and Australia which was the main market.
In 1974 designer Rudi Gernreich produced the "thong" bikini. Later this line of "thongs" began to be sold as underwear. Essentially these were just G-strings and because the latter term was more associated with strippers, thongs took over as the preferred term to describe this style of underwear.
Ultimately language pressure then saw many in the Northern hemisphere abandon the word thong to describe footwear and replace it with the word flip flop to avoid any unintended nuance.
So flip flops are just a cringe alternative to the true thong.
I will continue to proudly describe and show off my thongs to anyone who is happy to look.

This is a very scarce record, as only one was ever made. It was used to torture the terrorists at Guantanamo Bay prison. The prisoners were given a choice of 1 hour of this, or, 1 hour of water board torture. All the prisoners except one chose the water board. The authorities found out much later that that prisoner was deaf!
