Converting files of all sorts.

Afternoon all.

I’ve got a specific question but also thought why not create a thread re: how to do this or a place we can put files and people might be kind enough to convert if they know how.

I’m wanting to convert the Bendigo Regional Park Prospecting map to kml so I can use it on Trilobite. The map comes as a PDF and a bit of Googling suggests it can be converted from PDF to kml. But, I don’t have Adobe Acrobat. I can download and use it on Avenza maps from their store but I would prefer to have the overlay open in Trilobite.

Would someone have Acrobat and the skills to convert this file please? Wouldn’t just be for me, anyone on the forum could then use it

Thanks, it sort of did. I emailed that to myself and could see it was a kmz file. I then saved it as a kml file, emailed it to myself, opened it on my phone in Trilobite and it said there were no saved features.

I then tried the whole process myself using mygeodata website to convert the PDF to kmz and then save as kml, email it - same result.

I don't really understand Vector and Raster but my guess is that a PDF is lacking the important bits that need to transfer through to kml. Although, the kmz file opens up quite well on Google Earth on my desk top so I don't know.

I will email David from Trilobite about it and if I get the answer I'll report back. And if I do eventually get a file that works on Trilobite I'll attach it in here.

Not sure if BrokeInBendigo has been on here in a long time, he was a whiz at all of this stuff.

Simmo's method will give you an KMLSUPEROVERLAY (opaque image overlay in Google Earth - pic attached). If you want to view a point in the image overlay - put a GE pin on the point and then hide the overlay to view the satellite image. If you want to use the boundaries create a polygon, and then hide the image overlay (pic attached). The polygon/s can then be exported as .KML files and used in your GPS on your phone. e.g. to ensure you stay within prospecting district boundaries while prospecting.
As an example I've created a polygon for one of the Maiden Creek areas (pics attached). It shows as a pink area (25% transparency) with a black border. I've attached the example .KML used (it's in a .ZIP archive).

Thanks auriphile. Yes, I could create polygons for each seperate part of the park but then I would have to enable individual layers on Trilobite (turn it on, see if it is the right area, turn it off, try another one, etc).
For my WA trips each year I make those polygons in Google Earth, name them, shade them, etc and they work great on Trilobite. Good suggestion but just won't quite work for this application

Hilux - when I clicked on your link it took me through to a Google search with MyGeoData Cloud as the first option - I am guessing that is what you linked to? That is what I used in my attempt but didn't work. Thanks for trying though

I still haven't emailed David at Trilobite but will try to get time this arvo.

That link also offers lots of other options for PDF - KML conversion, if the first one you tried doesn't work for you, another one might.

I haven't tried Tribolite - I'll investigate. I use OSMTracker for creating maps, GetBackGPS and GoogleEarth for finding my way around. Does Tribolite allow you to keep your maps and travels private?
