I gave my coppers a bath in vinegar and salt last week in preparation for getting them into the coin album I just purchased,

I've noticed today some of them have turned purple? Is there anyway to turn them back?

Ouch......
No coppers to go into salt and vinegar solution !

and one mus'nt mix coins with green crap on them with other coins until such time as said coins are once again clean.
I.... have a bag of coins n green.

As for cleaning coppers...... well.... after a few you'll probly just want to store them en-masse.
:Y:
actually.... you can see some in the container going green

Salt and vinegar no good for coppers? I was advised by another forum member to do that, well that's what they do atleast?

Green crap is bad? You know, I know I was just going mental but I swore green crap was spreading. Say green crap again, green crap :D sorry, had too.

I'm just trying to collect all the years of 1c/2c and we'll every other coin for that matter, the album won't fill itself.
Regardless of condition, what's the best way to get the coppers clean enough to atleast see the date :p

I throw my coppers in the Tumbler....They come out great.... :Y:

I am curious about the tumblers, seems like you got to either make your own or fork out some decent cash

Will have to look into those pencils.

Do either the pencils or tumbler get rid of the aforementioned green crap :D

Yup sure do..... After a good tumble I let them air dry and then use Autosol to polish them up....None of the Pennies I have are worth anything anyway... Well some may be worth a $1 or $2 but I have no plans on selling anything I find anyway, unless of course it is a 1KG Gold Bar.... :) :Y:

What about heating them up cherry red and dropping them in some water. Probably a bit archaic but thered be shiny for a bit.

Hi

The green crap you refer to is called vertigrise. It is what happens to all copper objects as the original copper element is green in colour when found. It is near impossible to remove and doing so will devalue any valuable coins you find. I was advised by a coin dealer that I use not to clean any coin. Hope this helps. I m a serious coin collector and have a coin collection in the bank vault of course of every australian coin minted between 1910 and 1964. I have the 23 half penny ,1295 penny, 1930 pennny, 1932 shiling 1931 dropped 1 indian die penny etc,and am now into collecting varieties.

Green is Copper Cancer = Scrap bin as still get melt value for them...

Actually, all my BB finds go in the scrap bin any way. Only keep those that have never been in the ground.
