The area I have been panning has a number of shallow workings (4 foot depth) around the old river banks.
question is, worth going in a shallow digging and digging them wider to see if you find any colour. will be hard work but if its worth it I'm keen.
cheers

Depends whether whoever dug them was onto the pay streak or if they were just doing a bit of sampling themselves.
Have a close look at the side walls and see if there was something in the strata that they were chasing in particular.
Just be careful the banks dont collapse if the workings are near the edge, if their a little way back it could be that they were looking for the ancient bed of the same river and in turn a long buried deposit in the gravel.

Let us know what you find,
TGW.

its an ancient river bed of the same river about 5 to 100 metres away so I'm very keen on some sampling

Doing better than my sundays digging mate,
got a total of maybe 2 dozen colours from 3.5hours of cleaning crevices knee deep in cold water.

With results like you got itd be worth spending a day or two with a highbanker working your patch.

Well done

I just dug a little deeper and around a few existing holes. plan to give it a bigger crack next weekend or weekend after.
if I new how to put up pictures I would. ill give it a go I a day or to.

Thanks guys fingers crossed we all find some more :)

When you dug in the bottom of the hole,
Did it go to bedrock or a hard compact clay. ?
That is a brilliant result you have there mate.
I know what I would be doing.
Without going to deep.

in the first hole only went done about 10cm, but on the second hole I went down about 15 to 20cm and hit what seemed to be a bed rock with out close water it was hard to tell if it was just a floater or the bed rock I broke a peace off and washed it at home. and it an antimony rock with some nice quartz veins present.
I have about 10inch by 6 inch piece of the rock that am going to put thought my little jaw crushed to see if I get anything.

Is the place covered by an existing exploration licence...? The returns you got from 50L of material is exceptionally good. Are there many tree's in the area?
