Hi.there..

Just a question. I am going to be living in and around UK for possibly 12 months. The last time I was over that way I took my little old Minelab Stirling, and did find one or two nice coins.

Having now retired and having much more time to play ,I wonder what your collective thoughts are on my purchasing one of the deeper machines SD etc for such a trip, or any suggestion please on which detector would be the best in your opinion.

Cheers in advance .

Get what you can afford --pay peanuts and you get a monkey wrench. ;)

Thanks I shall remember that. I seem to recall that advice from somewhere over the past 67 years. I just didn,t want to waste a heap of money on a high end machine if it wasn,t necessary.I think as has been suggested i will try tap into a UK forum .i should have thought of that .An age thing

Hi Tony. If you are on Facebook maybe check some British groups and see what they use. Hopefully Ridge Runner will pop in with some sage advice. He is UK based if I remember correctly.

Thank you, I shall do that.I never thought of facebook.

A couple of suggestions Tony,

The ground in England is much more benign than here in Oz, so VLF detectors work quite well over there, but so do PI machines.

As Jaros says get what you can afford, but also consider that, from your original post, you'll be coming back here were the ground is noisier. Were it me, I would get the best you can afford to prospect here in Oz, it will work over there and you'll have a detector for when you get back.

The other option to save carrying there and back, is buy one there after doing some research with the Poms, then sell it before you leave. For 12 months, the loss should be minimal.

Just remember FB is that FB...

See if you can find a club in the area and contact them.

Detecting there is very different and they also often have Open days and you can use some club machines and see what works best for you and the area.

Just my 2c worth.

I'd at least want to be able to discriminate out iron for the purpose of coin and relic hunting. If it were me I'd be looking at either a CTX3030 or an XP Deus. Garret AT Pro or Makro Racer would be a good choice too at a big saving compared to the first two.

This is just my personal observation from frequenting a few UK detecting forums during the course of the year. If you want a capable detector for the UK, it should be able to deal with iron, and sometimes a lot of it. The most popular detectors are VLF's with fast recovery speeds and good iron discrimination for working disturbed/undisturbed soil full of iron junk (especially ploughed fields).

By far the most popular detector in the UK is the XP Deus, and its forte is picking out thin low conductor targets from amongst iron (hammered & gold coins/artefacts). The AT Pro is also very popular for its iron discrimination, fast recovery speeds and weatherproofing. The CTX3030 & Etrac are popular for detecting undisturbed ground for the deeper targets with with more reliable target ID's, though less capable on the very thin low conductor coins.

There also seems to be a few that run a combination of the CTX3030/Etrac and Deus, depending on the area/ground type, and coins that are targeted. Both machines have their strengths and weaknesses, and tend to compliment each other due to their unique abilities. If intending to hit the beach over there, the CTX/Etrac would be more capable options over the Deus.

In saying all that, there are plenty of other VLF detectors on the market that should prove just as capable, and on a lesser budget if that is a limiting factor (thinking Racer, Fors Core, Goldbug Pro/Teknetics G2, Tesoros, Minelab x-terras, etc.) It isn't unheard of to see large hoards and good finds from budget detectors like the Ace 250 and EuroAce, though more of a case of being in the right place at the right time.

A PI detector with little or no discrimination could prove to be a nightmare in such iron infested areas, unless specifically searching for deep hoards. If you were to use a PI detector, I'd be looking at a Whites SL/TDi with switchable conductivity for some sort of discrimination capability. :)

Yes, most of Europe is milder soils, but what they lack in iron mineralisation they more than make up for in bucket loads of man made iron.

A very fast VLF is the best. The Minelab Musketeer was (and still is) a top performer. If you want to hit small hammered coins, then you want something with a higher frequency. I think you couldn't really go wrong with any of the following:

Tesoro Vaquero
Tesoro Tejon
Nokta Fors CoRe
Nokta Fors Gold +
Whites MXT
Teknetics T2
Fisher F75
Minelab X-Terra 705
Makro Racer

This guys seems to be loving the Fors Gold + https://youtu.be/XF9dQhwDRhs
Check out his channel, he reviews and uses a bunch of different machines.

G'day Tony and sorry I missed your post, from what I see going on here, I would have to agree with Goldpick and Phase Tech, because here you can hit 10 targets in one sweep of the coil so you need something fast and deep which I would suggest the XP Deus, XP GoldMaxx Power, The Whites MXT Pro and the Nokta fors Core is starting to be popular and the Fisher F75 LTD is another hot one and don't forget the high end Tesoro's because before the XP's came along Tesoro and Lazer (Same machine different name it's just that Lazer are tuned for UK conditions) were the go to machine, If you need help when you get here I can put you in touch with the best Dealer over here and they are Brilliant people too, So just send me a PM and we can get you in the right direction and if you let me know as to which area you are going to we can sort out places for you to detect, Ok, As for using a PI over here the only place you can use them is on the Beach because there is so much junk in the ground over here and they will punish you, You can buy an XP Deus new for around starting at about $1400.00 over here, so if you decide to sell it when you get back home you won't loose much money on it.

Good luck,, John

Just for the record the XP Deus WS4 Lite is $1349 AUD right here in Australia.
Not being cheeky Just making sure that the Facts are out there as I am the Australian Distributor and comply with the XP pricing policy.

Sorry if this seems rude.

Yeah It does get confusing because there is about 5 or 6 options, gone are the days of the easy way out, lol
