So first up, I'm new at this, Metal detecting that is. Had a toy detector(Micronta 3001) when i was a kid that worked ok, so i've got some very very basic skills, and also don't own a proper detector just yet.

I hired a GPX5000, last weekend and had a crack but only found junk. Had a few hits where i couldn't find the source too, but spose that doesn't help.

Anyway just looking for tips as to where to focus attention, as there is lots of ground! Had a look at the left over dirt from some of the mines, and did some sweeps where the iron barks had pushed up the soil, but a bit lost for likely spots.

Also if anyone knows any spots to go in the Linton area that would be great to know. How do you go about detecting on property thats not private property?

Thanks

James

I had to have a look on google to find Linton (i'm not a native Victorian) and as you are "close" to Ballarat, i'd drop into one of the Detector shops there for a chat, pick up some maps, and get a better idea of what your doing from the locals there.

I picked up my 15.5 gram nugget in Linton. Plenty of areas to detect. Start with the old diggings and work your way out from there. Just take your time and swing low and slow.

Dont do what most newbies do (myself included) and keep racing from one spot to the next. I am still guilty of doing this now and have to force myself to slow down.

Make sure you get a miners right if you don't have one. You need it to prospect legally. $17.20 online and it transfets ownership of minerals you find from the crown to you. If you have one sorry, just thought it may be worth mentioning as we all have to learn these things. :)
