Looking through my jars of detector finds I come across this unknown metal I found about 2 years ago near Mt Morgan in Qld.
Is this Zinc? I found this next to some old 1900 gold diggings, maybe a melted zinc battery or float from gold refining.
It is as heavy as lead but very hard unlike lead, it has not tarnished in 2 years so it is not silver. Pitted on one side and smooth on the other.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Found stuff similar looking to that once before, a better search of the area led me to discover I was digging around an old forge, still have mine somewhere but could never find out what is was! :|

Zinc and other steel will "ring" when struck with an object like a fork...... unlike the lead which just has the dull "thud".

You could also try dropping it on the ground. Lead will thud and not bounce, everything else will make a "ting" sound and bounce.

Generally if it has some weight about it, its lead.

Hope this helps ;)
