What hand held radios are you using I am looking at GME 670TP or UNIDEN uh710sx -2 both off these you can use AA batteries ,I think that's a good idea anyone using either radio thanks :Y:

We are using 2 Uniden uh040xr 40 channel 0.5 watt we have had them for 15 years plus they have done all we need, still work fine just thinking of up grading :)

The thread put up by Ol'mate.308 is a good one.
I can attest to though that if you buy a GME etc, you are in the consumer range....and there is nothing wrong with that... buying Icom, Vertex/Yaesu etc you are in the pro range... and you will pay for the honour!

My beat about HH's are Oricom I think..

Dave said above, 'it's about the watts', yep true, but higher wattage, higher battery use. Its all cool that some pillock 15 k's away can hear ya, but ya partner just over the ridge can still hear ya too...
My point is, (and I'm an advocate of more power too) find a quality unit, that has selectable power out, and only use what is necessary for the situation that you are in.

I've got Vertex commercial units in my trucks and at my shed, some with high gain antennae. I've had reports the roadhouse could hear me and the missus clapping on all day....and they are 45 k's away! (lucky they have encrypters fitted eh....?!)

I have the Uniden and can't complain..... and I can use it on various power settings but max of 5 watts.... Unless... no I won't go there...

LW....

Think as has been said the use or purpose you require it for can really dictate the purchase. Just to talk to your prospecting buddy no big problem. On a cattle station where you might need to get back to the station base distance is much more of importance. :Y:
