Trying to dissolve a layer encrusting a nice dark smokey Tried hydrochloric acid from Bunnings but it didnt eat a layer that seems like a silica type...any hints or suggestions for another solvent...

The problem is that anything which eats away silica will eat away at the crytal itself as quartz is silicon dioxide. Would probably be best to take it off with a cabbing machine if possible in my opinion.
