How much water should be flowing through a highbanker and at what angle do you guys normally have the deck ?

Thanks in advance

Is it DIY,or did you buy a genuine walbanker ECT.
If you made it it will come down to a bit of seting it up as you go making sure your getting good fluidity in the walkway/breadcrate.
Do you want it set up for gold only,Gems only or both?

many setups for different reasons, help us help you :)

Hey mate i reckon if ya have at least an inch flowing over your riffles it will trap....angle is 1 inch drop for every foot long.......basicaly . ;)
There is alot of varibles like type of materials you feed and what treasure your looking for....start at that and work on it till you get it sweet. More water less angle ect... happy hunting mate. :D

Looking at getting Wal to supply one for me , a lot of Bathurst areas contain gems so I may aswell set up for them .

No worries, yobskin summed it up for the most part.I think wal said you get a dvd or some instructions about angle ect.

Happy hunting mate, look forward to seeing your finds :)

Just seen this, :)
Start at 1 inch drop for every foot,
With the bread crate about 10 to 15 mill of water over the bread crate then go from there.
Keep an eye on the small rocks dancing in the crate, Don't lift the top screen up while running.
As said before, There are a heap of variables to take into consideration so observation is the key on that and if not sure, stick a bucket or similar under the end and check it.
Don't worry, Brilliant design that when you are used to it will not let you down.
above all, have fun.

How often do you have the empty the sluice and what effect can it have if you run water with out shoveling material for a period of time .

Say I was wheel barrowing material to the sluice and while I was gone water was running through the sluice ,

If you want to highbank gems, you will need a pump that discharges > 200 litre/minute (aka Honda WX15).

As I only chase gold, I don't needs as much water in my Walbanker so use a Honda WX10 at 3/4 throttle which discharges somewhere between 100-140 litre/minute. I set the drop at about 8-9 degrees but it depends on how much water is actually flowing - I use the minimum slope necessary such that the material that initially builds up where the slick plate meets the expanded mesh will clear itself. So adjustment of slope is a 'suck it and see' on the day.

In response to your second set of questions:

I can run my Walbanker all day before I need to do a clean-up. However, curiosity always gets the better of me, so I do 2 clean-outs per day: one at lunch and one at the end of the day. For me, I will normally do somewhere between 20 - 40 x 11l buckets before clean-up.

I am confident you could run the Walbanker all day and not lose any gold; and you certainly won't lose any gold if you shut it off when not actually shovelling. I fill up 5 x 11l buckets, flash up the pump, run the buckets through (about 1/5 bucket at a time), and then turn off the pump, sit down and have a 5 minute break

YMMV.

I agree about 25mm flow over gold trapping arrangement.

Angle steep enough for a medium sized rock to travel down the deck at a medium pace. Watch it for the first few shovels then adjust angle as necessary.

The specific gravity of gold will do the rest for you.

Also agree with mdv, run it all day long. If you watch Gold Rush, they clean-up every 3 days to a week, processing massive amounts of pay dirt. There's wasted time and energy cleaning up every couple of hours, which I was guilty of early on.

You might cleanup to test an area and shovel for an hour in one spot.

Cheers

How many times ive said im running the banker ALL DAY, only to do 3 or 4 cleanouts just to get a bit of satisfaction that the gold is there. They say ur an idiot if u keep wasting ur time cleaning out, but yes, im an idiot!

Don't be too concerned, watch Wals vids and try and get close to that. Gold is very heavy so most will be caught unless you do ridiculous flows.

With Gems, just put your 2 classifiers at the end and everytime they fill up put them in a bucket and forget about it until back at camp or back home. You should keep about 70% in the banker, the rest will be in the sieves at the end....now in the bucket. Hours of fun once u r home!

Yep, I am an idiot too. LOL
Generally about once an hour to see just what is in there. especially if I am testing.

I found that if you run water for too long you lose the fluid bed under the expanded section and what ever is then trapped in the crate section. I tested this with lead with my test setup. I shut the pump down to a low speed if and when I have to attend to nature or have a smoke for a while.

Same here I run all day with mine and down throttle for breaks. The only time I stop is to refuel the pump. I then take the cable tray off and have a peak at the expanded section to see if the test pan didn't lie.
When starting up I start on the lowest throttle and gently get the flow back up. This doesn't suddenly flood the expand section and wash out the goodies.
