Here is the blurb: A new edition of our introductory book "Introducing Victorian Geology" is in preparation, but the second edition has gone out of print.

We have put a PDF copy of the old edition here for reference purposes, but take note that the text has become dated as the result of continued scholarship in Victorian Geology.

Until the new edition is ready, you might also consult the third edition of the Geology of Victoria, also available from GSA. Why not recommend it to your school, university, or local library, if it is not available there already?

Follow the download links on the site. I paid a fair bit of money for this book hard-copy in 1995 and now here it is free. Very good - a big book and it will help you greatly. Its not that out of date - some of the regions have been reclassified re: geological time scales but basically if you use this, and get a free download of Brough Smyths book 'Geology of Vic' and cross reference with old and new maps, you are a very good chance of finding your own undiscovered bit of ground to have a crack at. I can't put a $ value on what I have found on using these tools for prospecting and bugger me -they are now all free!!

Thanks Loamer,
Some the Vic Gov info is extremely interesting, add the Trove facility and it can keep one in that much research that getting into the field caould become a problem ...
Great resources (both now and in the past), thanks
Cheers Tom

Funny you should say that Tom. I developed a simple checklist for each location I look at - a collection plan if you will - and tick and flick the various research sources. I agree - you eventually have to stop. I now also take detailed notes and photos of the areas I cover because some of my old notebooks simply say - "Nuggety Gully - April 95 - total xyz". Ok I say to myself - which bloody nuggety gully, where exactly in the gully, weather, temp, which detector, soil, coil etc etc, mullock heaps, compass bearing of diggings, reefs close? etc. depth. argggghh. Its now important because with the detector and coil upgrades I want to re-hit all my old spots - the really good ones I remember - the little ones with solo nuggets or small bits and pieces - who knows.

Hey loamer, lucky I'm at the end of my working life/career, so apart from only working 4 days a week I also have time to do my research thanks to the boss (probably the only time I'll make a return from 'prospecting'.
Looking forward to real retirement, so much to do so little time.
Cheers
