Hi fellow prospectors ,
I'm just starting out on my first gold adventure in and around Sofala ( NSW) in the coming weeks. I bought a Minelab X- Terra 705 gold Pack. I did a little bit of panning around Oberon and found a few flecks of gold, but I think detecting will be more my thing once I get the hang of it. Can anyone help me out with weather condition when using it? Will it affect what it picks up ? Can I use it if there is a storm coming or if humidity plays any part in what it can detect .
Also will my detector be good enough to help find gold/ coins etc or stall I start saving my pennys for a better one?
Any information will be really helpful.
Thanks?

Hello,

Welcome to the adventure.

I am only new to this site, but from what people have told me, the 705 is an entry level machine, which may be good at finding coins on the beach or at the park. The gold pack should also let you find gold closer to the surface.

Minelab have release the Gold Monster, which is meant to be very capable and easy to use. I was advise to get a Pulse Induction machine. These are not as cheap as the VLF machines, though are finding gold.
The Minelab SDC2300 looks good, however, I feel it is a bit expensive.
Garrett ATX is not given the best reports, could be due to all of the Minelab users bagging it. Once again not cheap.
Whites have some PI machines and one I was told was good (now not in production) Tdi Aus Pro. Though this has also been given some average reviews from Minelab users. These were around $3k new, but occasionally come available on the second hand marker for a reasonable price.
Deus have a new setup which is advertised as being gold capable - not many reviews on the gold finds yet, but heaps of reviews on other finds.

If you can get up to Mudgee - There is a store up there, (Central West Prospecting Supplies) the staff are friendly and helpful.
In Sydney you have - Miners Den in Parramatta. (Minelab Specialist)
If you can get to Greta NSW there is a store Goanna Gold Detectors - Very helpful staff. While I have not been to the store yet, they have been great to deal with over the phone and have a variety of machines. Very knowledgeable people.
I believe there are other shops around down in Wollongong , Batemans Bay etc.

I hope this helps you out a little.

Hi . I have the the gold pack and have found a heap of coins. Have only just started to get into the gold side of things. I will be out with it soon enough and will see if i can find colour. Good luck

I have used mine along the beach with lightning nearby and havent noticed any changes.
You can use the 705 to find coins in parks etc and use them towards a better detector while gaining experience and seeing if detecting is what you want to do without spending the big dollars.
