I'm looking at buying a detector, and will be mostly using it in the northeast of Tas: Mathinna and Lefroy are the main areas I go to. Given the size of our gold, the detector has to be good for small nuggets. To any detectorists that have been around these areas: how mineralised is the ground up there? Specifically, would I a VLF with a good track-record for small gold run into a lot of trouble?

I'm assuming here that a fair bit of detecting has been done up there... or is it a case of suck it and see? :D

Thanks!

Most of the ground is ok, but there are patches of hot ground. Some areas around Lefroy can be noisy even with a gpx, the red clay balls are the biggest hassle when it's wet. An SD should handle it ok.

Thanks Diggerdude,

Anyone ever detected around Mathinna? The soil is non-existent, just slate rubble...

The company i work for has the U/G diamond drilling contract at renison bell, and henty, or had the last i heard...
ive offsided many drillers from tas and some have drilled all over Aus, and they say HANDS DOWN the worst ground to drill, cave ins, wedges, voids.... the lot, thats U/G tho, but i guess it must reflect the state of the surface ground somehow.
