I was just browsing through Trove and I found this:
Braidwood Dispatch and Mining Journal (NSW : 1888 - 1954), Friday 3 October 1947

Quick google search revealed this:

Goulburn Evening Post (NSW : 1940 - 1954), Wednesday 31 January 1951

Does anyone know if this is real or a hoax? If a fossil was found what happened to it?

Some more digging lead to Wikipedia and this article:

Kilmore Free Press (Kilmore, Vic. : 1870 - 1954), Thursday 27 November 1902

This website seems to think the Gundagai story inspired a hoax in Queensland... http://home.yowieocalypse.com/Lowood_Bunyip_2/

This site seems to think that Geologist E. J. Dunn observed several ani- mals swimming in the flooded Murrumbidgee River near Gundagai in 1850

Anyhoo enough cryptozoology for one night I'm off to bed.

Very interesting, but people putting bets on it being an " amphibious sheep " made me laugh
