Hi people,
Fairly new the game, running a 4500 with a coiltek elite 14", confident with the setup and the machine but struggling with choosing areas. From Macedon region and regularly head out west of taradale,Vaughan but not with a lot of success.

I normally try not to detect right in amongst the diggings thinking they will all be well done over but nearby none the less.
Is there anywhere else anyone can suggest nearby or am I better off travelling to Bendigo, creswick or muckleford, heathcote to have more chance?

Any info much appreciated

Hi Lawsy,
Any of the places you listed a worth a look. I'd suggest jumping on geovic and having a play, it will show you lots of areas you could try.
If your starting out, searching the diggings is a good way to learn, although most of your targets will be junk you will get some good practice at detecting, pinpointing and recovering your target as well as getting a feel for the machine while still having as much chance as anywhere of pulling some gold. Listen for the faint signals and dig everything.

Dont overlook diggings. They are normally my fallback spots when I havent found anything. Nearly always pull small bits from them.

I just had a quick look on GeoVic and there are a lot of deep leads running through and around Taradale. Have a good look on GeoVic and pick a spot and give it a good working over. It looks like there are a few good areas near there that would be worth a look.

Chewton,Castlemaine,Muckleford all very good places and all you have to do is walk them all that is your best option and it will only be a matter of time you will jag a bit, don't stress out about not finding any as you do need alot of patience in this hobby , it will come just enjoy the hunt.

Cheers

Thanks for your help guys,

Just got a hold of the geovic maps, will come in very handy!

Cheers again!

Lawsy I've just changed over from the Garrett ATX to the same setup you have and we are heading out shortly for the first time with the 4500. We don't have a lot of time so instead of travelling the usual 1000 km to find gold we've gone for a very small historic goldfield that I hope others have bypassed for the richer goldfields further out. My research has indicated that the area never had much alluvial gold.

We could go to the areas where we know everybody has found gold for the last hundred years but then we know they never left anything behind that they found. I'm working on the theory that a spot that never had much might have more today than the average spot that had a lot of gold but has been well flogged for many years.

I invited one of the more experienced guys to join us. When I told him where we're going he said that we'll find there's not very much ground there. We don't know much about finding gold but we've found that working a very small area very carefully we usually end up with something. Any time we've found something it's been in a very small patch so we just have to find that little patch ;)
