Not sure whether one is better than the other.
Started keeping mine in water i.e. wet but now just store it dry, having it in water does magnify it to some extent but when you start to get a bit it looks nice sliding around dry in a glass vial. also allows weighing, just tare an empty and then weigh your collection.
Cheers T.

I Keep It Dry....In a small vial full of water you can magnify it to look bigger, but inevitably a bubble will form in the Vial and then it has the reverse effect. Also easier to keep adding additional gold without making a mess.

Going through my old stuff at mum and dads I came across a old vile of mine with a wee bit of colour in it.
Well at least I knew it was there. Couldn't see it through the slime :8
So in the long run I'd probably keep it dry ;)

I keep mine wet - the magnify effect helps others to see it but doesn't impress them enough to tone down their cheeky remarks. Anyways recently I got my gold vial out to admire the wee bit that i have and again there were organic floaties ruining the view so i changed the water for metho - that'll fix them ;)

Bit of a sadist heh??? ;)

I haven't got enough to worry about that yet, but was told to use glycerine instead of water, apparently stops the above mentioned problems.
Cheers,
Billy.

Don't know if you've seen the vials of pure gold leaf you can buy. I know they used to sell them in the Adelaide Museum for something ridiculous like $15 each I think.. The gold is rolled out into really thin long strips and it is sold in vials full of oil, maybe baby oil, not sure, but it does look sensational, maybe an alternative to water, but not good if you ever want to cash it in

Yea i just dried mine out recently, loving that rattle lol.

Does anyone else get that weird static inside the vial? Little flakes stick to the side a lot, but I know it's not wet and a simple flick to the vial makes them all drop.

I keep most of my really fine gold in jars full of water untill I think its worth cleaning it down. Majority thought gets cooked off straight out of the sucker bottle and weighed so I know how productive an area was. Dry also allows me to oull bits out and study them with the magnifying glass which is probably my most favorite part of having it.

That's my fave part of the hobby too. I got a USB microscope on line for $21 delivered, but it is too good, 1000X, so even the smallest bit of my gold fills the entire screen and you lose the perspective. I'm going to get another one, maybe 200X.
