Found this stone while panning today just wanting to get a rough IDE of what it is.

I'm going for tumbled quartz with citrine colouring by looking at the end, which looks like it came off a quartz plate. A pic of it on white paper only, without back lighting, would make identification easier.

Cheers Wal.

See which stones it will scratch and which stones will scratch it. (assuming you have a collection)

With corundum (sapphire) being 9 on the Mohs scale, topaz 8, quartz group 7, zircon 6.5 you should be able to get a fair idea.
The scratch may need to be observed through a magnifying lens, a white mark left on a harder stone by a softer one can be confusing.

My thought is water worn amber glass which wont scratch any of the above.

Have been caught out by that one.
(the old deep green glass phone line insulators were often cut and passed off as emerald) :(

Looks like zircon crystal to me, take a look at the cross section (pointy end) if its 4 sided zircon, six sided quartz. :)

From that pic I'd put my money on tumbled piece of beer bottle. Can you say what river you found it in, as this could possibly determine stones such as zircon and sapphire associated gems.

Looks a tad different in the second pair of photos.

Are you able to do a specific gravity test? Zircon will be rather heavier than glass.

Very often, the camera just does not want to see things the way the eye sees them. Maybe don't give up on it just yet, I've found zircons that colour.
