Sitting by the window of her convent, Sister Barbara opened a letter from home one evening. Inside the letter is a $100 bill her parents have sent. At that moment, as she sits on the windowsill, her gaze falls upon a shabbily dressed stranger leaning against the lamp post below.
Quickly, she writes, "Don't despair. Sister Barbara", on a piece of paper, wraps the $100 bill in it, gets the man's attention and throws it out the window to him. The stranger picks it up, and with a puzzled expression and a tip of his hat, heads off down the street. The next day, Sister Barbara is told that a man is at her door, insisting on seeing her.
She goes down, to find the shabbily dressed stranger waiting. Without a word, he hands her a huge wad of $100 bills.
"What's this?" she asks.
"That's the $8000 you have coming, Sister," he replies. "Don't Despair paid 80 to 1."
(Ok I pinched this off Peter Fitzsimons' page on the SMH, but its a goodie)
