FYI.

Had a good read of this wikipedia article.
Thought it might be of interest to others.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sapphire

While on the subject, I was on Mr. Google looking for pics displaying the different (single) colour variations of sapphire.
I never realized there were so many single colour varieties.

Life can be tough for a sapphire hunter with all the variations of colour.
Now I find they come in clear shade as well.
I'll have to keep every little piece of rock I dig up from now on (quartz, topaz, diamond, calcite, etc, etc. and do all the tests ...........
You know, hardness, specific gravity, etc.
I wish quartz wasn't so easy to find.
Bugger, I might just give it all up and take up a simple hobby like ......... knitting.

Specific gravity is pretty much all you need for a suspected Sapphire. No need to start knitting, lol.

Have a look at this for a freak of a sapphire. I love it, trying to work out what to get done with it, showed my mate the other day and he just said he has a few ideas. I reckon it needs some sort of freeform cut as I want to keep a bit of size in it and maybe set it it a pendant or something.

That's Barney's finger after pre forming it. :)

Yeah the striped one is a ripper just for the sake that it's an odd looking stone.

Yes that does happen - bitten by the lap/cabbing wheel

I love sapphires for that very reason - they are so unique that it can sometimes be hard to find two that look exactly alike. Got some absolute pearlers at the Anakie Gemfest. One that we had to leave as money was running out was an amazing looking pharaoh's eye stone. Would have cut a beautiful stone, bright blue with a bright yellow eye.

That stone of yours has a colour that's almost difficult to pin down exactly - like a nice ice blue-green. Luv it! :Y:

Cheers Lefty, yes I love the Pharaohs eyes as well.

Hey Mackka, he's running a facebook page at the moment. He lost his password here but I got it sorted out for him and am trying to convince him to come back and post some of his gem pics.

He's been cutting some amazing stones and is supplying a bloke who does some incredibly tasty custom jewellery.

He's well though mate.
