In a discussion with a bloke yesterday I was told many points of information about my local area that he had been handed down years ago. In the conversation, he started to explain the sapphire, topaz and some other minerals had come from Africa or South Africa. Is anyone able to explain this a bit more as I know nothing about glacial deposits or that subject at all. I thought they came from the granites but supposibly not now.

I'm not a geologist but I don't think you'd find any that would agree that any gems in Vic originated in Africa. They would have originated from extrusive magma, granite or metamorphics, all of local origin I would think. There was a stage when all continents were joined as one supercontinent - Pangea- but I would think that the origin of anything in Victoria is Victoria.

But as always, I could be wrong :)

That's right , look at tourmaline or some other deposit from South America , Africa , Australia , all where local at one point . Think of the stuff under / in Antarctic , would love to dig that icy water :)

Nothing drifted from other continents though , in Ice or whatever , that's some madcap stuff , or misinterpreted .

Some eels still travel thousands of ks to New Caledonian waters and png , from aus to breed , then make thier way back . Evidence of plate shifting that hasn't allowed little critters to change thier breeding habits . Cool stuff

I havnt been able to find anything online EXCEPT that the stones here are the same as those over in south america. Must be where the jumble happened. This also includes diamonds too.

Cheers kingsolomon, silver and lefty. I guess they do come from the granites here still... just like I always said  :8

Supposibly we have a giant eel here that likes to chase fully grown men to thier cars and eat dogs.....should come up in google..
