Hi all
Do round mono coils go deeper than elliptical?
I'm considering getting a larger coil to get more depth but not sure whether to go round or elliptical. Elliptical is better for maneuvering amongst obstacles but am unsure whether I loose depth. Is it a trade off of depth versus maneuverability? Is it minor/insignificant or considerable?
Appreciate any opinions.
That's the end of my coffee break, so back to work.
Cheers Dig'n-it.

Yeah round's will generally punch deeper than elipticals of same/similar size. A 15 inch round will probably punch deeper than say a 15x12.

Round put out a deeper field, but ellipticals usually have a sharper response, particularly on smaller targets.
Depending on the size of the target, and the size of the coil, I'm sure you could see examples of a round coil being superior, and an elliptical being superior.

I recently did some tests for a customer who was thinking of getting a bigger coil for his TDI.
A 16" round nugger finder advantage vs 15x12' commander. On bigger targets the 16" got about 2 inches better depth, but the 15x12 got about 1/2 inch better on smaller stuff. But on anything within range, the 15x12" had a sharper response.

The 15" Evo had the Sensitivity of the 15x12 and the depth of the 16"! The new coils have definitely changed the game, and our perception on coils

Thanks Phasetech
I have a 11" Coiltek Mono Elite which is great but gets a bit too sensitive in high heat in the middle of the day in the Vic Golden Triangle, and a 15x12" Mono Commander which has good depth on large targets, though only steel found to date. I was toying with going for a 14" Coiltek Elite or 15" NF Evolution or 17x13" NF Evo Mono. I have watched your test comparison of test pieces from 0.1 to 2.83g. To be honest I wasn't overly impressed with any of the coils you tested on the 2.83.
No doubt as targets get bigger the bigger coils will perform better.
So considering my specific circumstances what would you recommend?
Cheers Dig'n it
