Rookie at this, well I am not even a rookie...

Gday there. I have for twenty years been saying that 'one day I'm going to go and look for gold'. I now have three young children, one of which loves the camping in the aussie bush experience and another who loves gems and crystals and 'treasure hunts'. So I would like to combine all three of these factors into some fun family times. But I do not know where to start. So I thought I'd ask the following questions to anyone who may be able to point me in the right direction. I wish to basically learn how to gold prospect with a metal detector, and then learn about where one can go to do so. Are there courses available? Could anyone recommend a 'teach prospecting' company. I am in Victoria by the way and assume any such activities would take place in the Ballarat and Bendigo regions I guess so I suppose if anyone has experience in this area I'd appreciate some tips. Thanks for reading my post and hopefully I might get a few pointers.

Welcome nodoubtingthomas, I can't help with the metal detecting or Vic but I have young kids as well and I augment their camping with fossicking. I primarily sluice for gold and fossicking adds a great activity and exercise for them when camping.
