Recirculating sluice

Bought this set up yesterday. I needed a bilge pump for my miller table and this setup was only $50 and came with three pumps.

The bloke i bought it off said it was hes brothers un finish project. He didnt know how it worked
So i need some help as to what he was trying to accomplish. The sluice is 1200mm long 400mm wide and 250mm height. 3 mm ally.

it sits on this stand. There is holes in the frame to adjust the pitch.

that angle is as flat as it goes. Seems a bit steep to me. I was thinking of trimming it down and turning it into a river sluice or highbanker with dream mat. Any ideas

Hi Bluecurrant,

The Rule pump is only 1100gph and would not deliver enough water to a 400mm sluice. The two small white pumps connected together may have been an attempt to increase the water volume over the sluice. I doubt whether all three pumps would provide enough water. The steep angle of the sluice may have been an attempt to compensate for the lack of water.

If it were mine, I would be considering one of two options:

1) convert it to a high banker, redesign the stand and not use the bilge pumps or

2) cut and re bend the sluice so that it is 200mm wide. This option would bot appeal to some as it is quite wasteful. You would, however, have a sluice that would be useful and costs incurred would be minimal. I would also redesign the stand so that it has more adjustment options in relation to fall and uneven ground.

After having another look at the photos, the front of the sluice should be lifted and would therefore provide the adjustment in fall that you need.

If the sluice was to re circulate water, an extra tub would be beneficial. Link the two tubs via a siphon system and you can then pump water back to the sluice from the second tub. This keeps much of the sand and gravel out of the pump housings.

Made something similar a while back to help with cleanup.
Used my mckirk grubstake which is nice and narrow with 2 of those plastic warricks different heights to give angle and made a header box outta a stainless tray. With a small Rule 12v bilge pump running it it did well.

I like the sluice bit if yours there, itd be worth adapting it to be a river sluice or even the lower half of a small banker.
Definitely drop that angle down if youe going to use it as a recirc sluice otherwise all the fine gold will get washed through.

. If i was to cut it down into a river sluice would i need to fabicate a funnel at the entrance, to increase water speed. Im contemplating putting in dream mat aswell, as im finding lots of fine gold. No nuggets yet.I have a walbanker so i dont really need anouther highbanker. A river sluice would handy as the creeks up here never dry up.

I would discard that riffle system something is not quite right with it. And yes funnel for sure Just my thoughts cheers Jemba.

A pair of hinged flaps makes a good flare/funnel, easier to pack in and adjustable too.

I looked up dream mat and it comes in 200mm widths, ill go with the river sluice idea. Thanks everone for sharing your info. If anyone wants the mesh, miners moss, stand let me know as i have no use for it. :Y:
