Recent Obsession + 3 week road trip

Hi All,

I am not only a newbie to this forum, but this is the only forum that I have ever been a member of.

I moved to NSW from SA about 2 1/2 years ago and about 18 months ago I found myself a new obsession for spending large amounts of money and time digging up shiny stuff that is worth a fraction of my investment.

My missus is not quite as enthused about this as I am, but so far she has tolerated the uncontrolled spending for minimal return, and I want to keep that going for as long as possible.

She has advised me that we will be taking a 3 week road trip at the end of October from Sydney to the Sunshine Coast via Byron Bay, and has offered to let me plot some locations along the way to indulge myself.

Can anyone recommend some good places to visit anywhere in Northern NSW and/or Southern QLD that I could find some nice spots for Gold mainly, but also gems will keep her interested too, distance is not really a problem on this occasion.

I would really appreciate any areas that you might be able to point me toward.

Hi welcome aboard Silicon2. Sorry I'm not in the know for that part of the country so can't offer any advice but I'm sure somebody else more knowledgeable than me will be able to suggest some places along the track.

I made quite a few trips down that way from Adelaide back in the day, there and Naracoorte both, but unfortunately had not discovered the joys of prospecting at the time.

You could try digging saphires in Inverell.

I made quite a few trips down that way from Adelaide back in the day, there and Naracoorte both, but unfortunately had not discovered the joys of prospecting at the time.

Yeah not a bad place, but no gold or gems to found, and it's about as far to the vic goldfields as it is to Adelaide, we do have a few fossils laying about though.

Dont know if your still looking for locations silicon2 but on the way up stop in the hills behind coffs harbour and have a goldhunt, then head west on to inverell for some sapphires and either head further west to bingara for a bit of everything or then head north east to drake for some more gold , after that an hour drive to mallanganee will see you find some labradorite then if your into thunder eggs head to doon doon after which you can join back onto the highway just south of the gold coast , be a nice way to spend 3 - 5 days
