There are very few areas you are allowed to prospect in the area you are looking at. I know gold was found in the Otways but you are not allowed to prospect in there.
You would have to head inland - Rokewood, Linton, Enfield etc would be closest to coastline.

You wpuld not want to prospect in the Otways - although reported I doubt if even a single ounce was produced in total. SteelPat gives good advice - Steigliz would be closer but most is restricted - also Meredith, Elaine, Bamganie, Ballark, Morissons, Dolly's Ck, Mt Egerton.....Dolly's Ck turns out a few nuggets
