So which to get ?

Tin Oxide

Cerium Oxide

I'm planning on using the rough (back) side of some upholstery leather on the slant cabber with 1 of the above for a final polish, but which to get ? Or both, and why ?

Some rocks need Tin oxide and others need Cerium Oxide....

Back when I specialised in decoupage I used a Micro Mesh kit as a final finish.

Sand with wet and dry to 1200 then step up till 12000.

Brilliant finish.

I found this chart and I'm wondering if I just use a leather buffing disc how many items in the "felt" column would be ok on the leather, if that makes sense

So it appears to me that there are 3 polishing compounds, cerium oxide, tin oxide and linde "A"

I've got my w&d sandpaper kit and gave a couple a run tonight, 2000,2500, skipped the 3000 and went to the 5000.

Stones have a shine like new stone bench tops at this stage. The next grit is 7000, is this worth while or should I now go to polishing compounds

Keep going with the micro mesh untill 12,000.
Gives a mirror finish.

Experiment with your methods xc, go to your 50k now from the 7k and next time go up to 12k and choose your preferable finish. High end gems are finished with either 50k, 100k or 200k, but that may not or is not necessary on plated slabs. It all depends on how much shine you want to put on your product, but all said, you are progressing the right way by not skipping meshes to close up your surface from any sly scratches.
