Pictures of last years Silver.

I thought I'd show last years Silver coins from all the various hunts put together.
In the first picture all the 50% silver is on the left, with the pre 1945 .925 silver coins on the right.
The four coins on the extreme right are Victorian sixpences top to bottom 1874, 1883, 1881 & 1881.
The one with the hole in the centre is a 1934 shilling that was used as a washer or a spacer.(pity it wasn't a holey dollar).

Some are good, some are bad, but they all made me happier when I found them !!!

Will you clean your silvers?
I always check to see if their valuable ( never are ), if not I soak them in lemon juice for about 10 minutes then use Bi-Carb to wipe off the dirt

Someone posted what they collected last year (might have been over a 6 month period), I really liked that idea so I'm trying to do something similar

That is clean for the moment, until I discover that perfect method I'll just let em all sit(washed in soapy water).
I've tried wet bicarb, but its a bit like using a super fine powder cleanser(through the loupe). I will try your method when I get a lemon though.
I don't mind if we all put our pictures of silver finds in here !

It's hard to let go of them Angre7, probably a bit like gold fever I suppose.
I do have an album with some that I've cleaned before(while back), I'll get some pictures on soon.

Righteo, here are some pictures from the Album.
Most of these coins(all the pretty silver ones) were retrieved in the one part of a ripped beach.
You can see on some of them that they were washed around in the sand a bit and abraised on some of the high points.
They were all totally sand encrusted, this protected them from being further abraised when the beach ripped.
Sort of like their own little protective coating from the silver oxide joining with the sand to make a crust.
They were all cleaned using salt and white vinegar.

Hi Silver,
I noticed the shilling you found that had been used as a washer. I found my first penny yesterday (haven't been at this very long)... and it has a hole in it that looks like a bullet hole? Size would indicate something like a 303 or maybe 7.62mm have you ever come across coins used for target practice?

And I can only hope to find some pre decimal coins like you have at some point in the future.

Hi Robert, yes I do find the occasional target practice coin, only ever in copper coins(they weren't going to wreck good money to spend)

Some nice finds Silver well done ! Where did you get the coin pockets from great way to keep them in ?

Hi Goldansand, you can get them at garage sales sometimes, but coin shops would be a lot easier.
They have different size coin books with extra plastic coin sheets that you can buy separately, can't remember exactly how much they are, but they are not too expensive.
I know that the coins we find in the ground may not always be great, but it makes sure that under our care they won't get any worse for wear ! I used them on 1/2d and 1d(pennies) at first as well, until I found out that when you clean off the copper oxide(patina) you leave them all pitted(unrepairedly so), so now they just get stored thrown in a bottle or "bags with rolls of dirty coins"(coppers).
