I took my new (and first) detector out today to a local hill near the Yarra just to have a bit of a play and familiarisation session.

It's a spot I've walked with my kids before and it has this stunning view of the river - but it's not the main trail of the area so it's nice and quiet for the most part. The area is quite interesting as it's on a hillside yet there are 'mounds' for use of a better word and little shallow gully sections that could potentially be small water courses that spill into the Yarra when it pours (It's really quite steep). Everything is covered in a soft mossy ground covering. I don't 'think' it's an old digging area, but I'm no expert either. Nevertheless, I managed to ping a few targets (all trash) but upon digging I noticed the area littered with quartz stone, and for the most part all rounded......which leads me to the question - Am I seeing stones that were once the bed of the Yarra?? I'm probably a good 50-70m above water level so my mind was kind of boggling...could there be any other explanation?

*Also, I'm not 100% sure if detecting is allowed in the area - how can I find out, or if it's only shallow scratchings and you're backfilling afterwards, is that ok??

Probably not ok. As a general rule its ok in state forests unless specifically banned. You need a Miner's Right to prospect anywhere.

The main thing is is that it is quite difficult to work out where is allowed and where isn't, very place-specific. So, once you find a spot you're interested in, it's time to do the research with Dr Google.

Do the right thing, do the research, get your Miner's Right, and keep this pastime open to everyone...

Here's a link to the PMAV (Prospector's and Miners Association of Victoria) they have a Melbourne branch that run field days which you will be more than welcome to attend.

https://pmav.org.au/

This is our state lobby group who work voluntarily to keep public fossicking and prospecting ground available for us to use. It's well worth your investment now and in the future to support the PMAV. At a minimum you will be socialising with like minded people and learning, shortening the curve so to speak.

For the sake of all of us It's imperative you learn where is permissible and which locations are off limits. All to often new chums come into the fold with good intentions yet all the while putting accessible ground at risk.

Best of luck
