AnY Ideas.

Hi there Cheese,

I have found a similar one, along with some clay tobacco pipes. I think it has the same poorly featured Victoria head and other side is completely barren. Even the tarnished top and bright underside are similar. It looks like yours has had a hole in it to attach to a fob or neck chain.

The size fitted perfectly into the pipe, so I believe it is an old clay pipe tobacco stamper. The marks on yours may be where the owners penknife was used to apply pressure to the disc to flatten the tobacco or put the pipe out for Ron.

I may be off the mark, but it is my best guess as to the purpose of the one I found.

It would be nice if the were a limited edition early Australian produced coin, we would both be sitting of a small fortune. ;)

Where did you find it ??

Interesting thought Wally and very good observation,
But I found the coin where an old horse race track
use to be, Very dry out here and the coin shows colour
not made by ground conditions and yes the marks on the coin
tell a story. hope we can get some answers on it.

And the time piece I posted, was prob for the racing clock.

I found mine near Bendigo overlooking some diggings in a spot, based on the trash, I thought may have been an old pub tent or a drunk mans mining camp.

I have done a bit of research but have yet to find anything that supports a conclusion.

The fact that the two appear to be identical should mean that they were made that way for a purpose.

Old Pipe cap, Yup my thoughts.
as you can see the top all clean
and the underside has a carbon deposit
burnt I would say tobaco.
Notice the solder on the clean side or top
and hinge under side?
I have no idea what the pit marks are for or
prob were there before the pipe was made.

Found it, although I have cleaned it to see if there were any discernible markings.

There is the start of VICTO....looks close to where the 6 pence mark should be.

I wonder if we have some one sided crappy minted 6p? I know they were short of coin in early settlement, perhaps they shipped a batch of rejects in.

The reverse of yours looks like it has a feint die edge mark whereas mine is completely barren.

This one has me stumped.
