Watching a lot of YouTube Videos (I assume from the US) they talk about Flower gold
Is this just a term for small particles

When one finds gold in say Victoria then what does one do with it
Sounds like a silly question but who buys the gold and do they buy small flakes surely there would be a minimum weight
Do they buy quarts rock with gold in it

Does anyone on here melt gold into small billions (Ive done some aluminum casting)

Is one suppose to report big finds and to whom

Lots more Newbie question coming

Hi nev welcome
You are right about flower gold
I melt my own into 3oz blocks/bricks i sell local to a bloke that invests in gold
I drop $300 (we use gold price australia) on each but i think to drive to sydney i would spend that much anyway
There is gold places in nsw vic and qld that do buy it however they have set amounts that they spend on each purchase
give these a call and see what they say
the price for the amount purchased changes each week

Sometimes when there's lots of flakes it can be fools gold, especially if it's visible on the surface. :)

flour gold because it looks like flour (or talcum powder) also called micron gold or less often you might call it 100- gold (because its smaller than the holes in a 100 mesh sieve)

fine gold is bought in a lot of places, anywhere you buy good prospecting equipment should be able to buy it off you for 5% off the spot price. since most of us are hobbyists though we keep most of the gold we find

quartz and other rock with gold showing is typically referred to as 'specimen' gold because its showing the gold in its naturally occuring state. because its impossible to weigh accurately the gold content the specimen market is not strong, try jewelers or ebay if you have a pretty piece (especially if the gold is in a crystaline structure) otherwise crush it in a dolly pot and extract the gold if you want to sell it.

people do melt their own gold but its only worth doing if you have a good reason to. any commercial buyers still wouldnt pay perth mint prices because they cant be sure of the purity etc.

ive heard but havent confirmed that finds over 100 ounces have to be reported as theyre considered natural treasures. the govt will pay you the weight of the nugget but nugget value is significantly higher than weight value so you lose out.

keep em coming
