Hi all, today I had my first go at panning.
I chose a likely old creek I remembered from a dirt bike ride years ago that had rock riffles running 90 to the old flow. Got right down in a big crack and got colour straight away.... But not just gold, silver??? Anyone know what it could be? Located in macedon ranges if that helps. Thanks!

Is the gold a silver color as well or some of it. ??
First guess without a photo is Mercury.
Welcome to the forum.
Please feel free to hop up to introductions and give us a welcome from you. :) :)

I have a pic but can't post links yet haha... I was thinking Mercury. Either way it's all only small... Some of the gold has the silver stuck to it. Thanks for the reply

Sounding like Mercury being that it has a bit stuck to gold, be nice if it was a joint venture between gold and platinum

Platinum! Don't get me too excited I'll be out there with the head torch on haha...
I'm hoping I can find something a little bigger to get a decent look at it. I think that the crevice had a long way to go but my screwdriver couldn't reach any deeper! Still managed colour in every pan.

Until you are sure, store it in a jar with a bit of water over it. That will stop the Mercury from evaporating and giving you a sniff when opening it.
Keep it cold.
Also store the clean gold away from the silver coated gold if you can.
Don't be put off mate. It is worth it.
Love to see some photo's when you can and also well done. Looks like you have cracked a corker of a spot. :D

Thanks for the tips! But it's so small I probably don't need to worry... I'm sure there would be some tasty nugs down deeper and it's going to drive me crazy until I get out there with some more appropriate tools.
