Newbie Detector

Hi.. Im 56 y/o from Melb.. I'm a newbie to detecting, y'all probably have a name for people like me, but newbie is all i can come up with lol.
I have always wanted to try my hand at it but could never afford a detector. I finally got some $ together, but still could only get a GM1000.. I'm told it's a pretty good detector to start with. I've also bought a pick and pan and a sieve and have been researching online a bit on YT.
I like to travel with my caravan, so I have the means of getting out there, and have been travelling on and off for around 6 yrs .. although my car is just a Captiva, so I can't really go too off road.
I am looking forward to getting involved in the forums to learn more from you all.
