G'Day All been into camping and four wheel driving now for a lot of years, as we're getting older the hard tracks and recoveries are losing there appeal so we have decided to combine our camping and four wheel driving with a bit of metal detecting.
Being retired and money being so tight, we couldn't afford one of the new flashy Minelab metal detectors so we bought one of the ex Army Minelabs that have been talked about all over the net the last couple of months. Don't know how it will go on gold but it certainly found a load of nails in my back yard at varying depths and we took it for a quick spin down to a beach area close to us, where it found lots of metal, tin cans, ring pulls, even a couple of old railway tie nails and a 20c coin. So it definitely finds stuff.
We're planning a trip round Hill End in the school holidays. Any advice or tips anyone is willing to share would be gratefully received for a couple of old fart newbies.

Hello Hungover & welcome to the forum.
Sounds like your machine is making all the right noises for ya! - Nice.

I'm not into the detecting side as much so my advice ain't worth much in that field.

Best of luck out there - enjoy

Hi Hungover , hope you name is not a permanent affliction :)

Hill End is a tough place to find anything , especially if you are learning.

What general area are you in ?

Cheers Paul

Like the name hungover, welcome mate. Never had the pleasure playing with army minelab but as you said seems to be finding stuff so good luck with it. Detecting around some old ruins could also be an idea. Check out the google earth and the layers/locations of old mines on this forum, may give you an idea where to setup your camping ground. Cheers Joe

G'Day and thanks for the welcome

Headbut...not so much age takes a toll takes longer and longer to recover. We live Sydney South West out Picton way not many places out this way or at least we've not found any.
Hill End is the first place we thought of been out that way a few times camping so we thought it would be a good place to start don't expect to find much though

Evening Joe thanks for the reply, yep finding any "old stuff" is our goal not just gold,on our trips out into the bush we've come across some very interesting places old ruins graves out in the middle of nowhere were set up quite well when we go camping so tend to go to places well off the beaten track so to speak. Once found the hull of an old WWII tank, I think it was a Crusader from memory. That was in the bush not far from where we live.

Geez Hungover, your finding heavy metal without a detector. What are going to unearth now!
I dont detect but one thing I can say is research research research...

Goodluck out in the boonies
