I have always looked at gem stones as a form of madala do to the the presice geometric angles formed over time

Welcome Charlie, Gemstones are certainly one of the wonders of nature, and they hold many fascinations with their beauty. Hope you find the forum informative and if gemstones are one of your interests, you will find much about them within the Gem and Mineral section.

Cheers Wal.

thanks nugget thanks wal, I can see there are many experienced fossickers and prospecters on this forum, i have definately come to the right place. I have found red blue green corundum between tumut and wee jasper and am new to the geology side of things, I noticed it has waves of rocks streaming down the mountains, very nice landscape, whats strata or period is that ero, would it be paleozoic

would the base of a high banker be still effecient if dimensions were 300 mm down to 200mm by 1.6 metre length, running 4 stroke pump, pretty much built like wal's, only using bunnings floor mat, diamond shape instead of bread crate

G'day charlie, when you get to 10 posts send me a PM and i can go through all the different aspects of Hi-banking for you. There are many alternatives depending on the main locations you intend to prospect. There are also many different trapping formulas, and riffle designs that work well in different scenarios.

Cheers Wal.

thanks wal, sound like a sience in building a good high banker. I like that. I have only 2 wheel drive and go where i can between tumut and wee jasper, (small gem), currently i have been using seive pan bucket with classifier over top, not shy to dig down. This region in winter is where i want to high bank due to the result i had with pan, I building highbanker only to wash alot more dirt, and the fact that when I dug down 1.4 metres, roughly, i come across very thick grey clay, very hard to break up by hand. I hunt for gems

I talked to a couch driver many years ago and asked him why his 2 top air vents were closed at front and open at back, I would have thought vise versa, he said vortex is created and will pull the air in, I thought air travells like water so thought diamond matting

If wee jasper is from devonion strata, paleozoic period, Would the cambrian strata hold more gems than devonion, and is limestone commonly found to be the lowest strata

Best research the geological periods and their relationship with gem formation on the net charlie. To explain this in lay mans terms would take up a whole page and then some. Check the known gem deposits with their corresponding geological periods on a geological map and then relate these periods to the areas your searching.

This will help you know the possible extent of the gem material. Remember these areas have also changed with things like glacial movement and folding/uplifting of the geological area so many dispersed pockets of gems are usually scattered throughout the region.

Best of luck and research will help shine a clearer light on where to dig those stones.

Cheers Wal.
