New to Australia

Good day, my name is Gene from Oregon. USA and I will be visiting you folks this spring(fall) for a couple of months. I will be based in Port Macquarie NSW with friends and would like to do some fossicking while in your country. My friends have never done any thing like this so it is up to me to set up a plan. Regulations there are pretty confusing to me and I don't want to get in any trouble since I think that I would like to come back after my first visit. Therefore I think that I should stay with the designated fossicking sites like Woolridge and those around Glenn Innes. I might make it out to Lightning Ridge if it is not to hot(Oregon is damp and cold this time of year so it might be quite a shock). I am not looking for any secret locations but feel like I might be missing some interesting places that are accessible( 2WD) and legal on my internet searches. I will hunt for anything: gold, gems and fossils. Thank you for any help you can give.

Thanks Ramjet, I probably should have posted on a more general forum but since I found the back of a gold filled pocket watch in my back yard I have the gold fever plus. Now the yard looks like "Craters of the Moon". Good thing I have no one to answer for it.

Hello Gene .
There is a town called Tibooburra in the far north west of New South Wales that has a large common area round it you can detect gold for free . Just don't go until our winter !
