There are navigation apps you can download to your phone so you dont lose where you parked your car , or handheld gps devices anywhere from $95 to $300.
There are apps like Avenza that allow you to import maps on to an iPad that has GPS so you can navigate accurately around old gold areas.
For people who go where there is no phone coverage , epirb costs about 1/20 th the cost of a detector and can save your life.
Search on eBay for bushnell backtrack if you want a nice cheap safety device.
