Welcome aboard, Dan. The F5 is a relatively low frequency detector (7.8kHz), which isn't ideal for small gold, but it's a great detector for coins, jewellery and relics.

The free e-book "F5 Tips & Tricks" is a great resource, compiled from posts on Find's Treasure Forums (http://www.findmall.com/list.php?37), mostly made by a bloke who is an F5 virtuoso: http://www.treasurelinx.com/uploads/Fisher_F5_Tips___Tricks_Apr_2013_rev.pdf

I'm looking at buying a whites tdi in the next couple of weeks or something similar for around the 1k 2k mark
