Hey guys,

My name is Roman and I am a German exchange student, studying at Swinburne in Melbourne.

Back in Germany I started detecting before two years with a MD 3009. So just some beginner equipment to try what it is like. I did some beach hunting and searched for military stuff form the second world war (lived near Hrtgenwald) ...

Now I want to start beach hunting in Australia as well and are looking for a second hand metal detector. I had a look on ebay and gumtree and did ascertain that there are just a few second hand detectors in my budget. I like to spend around 250 $. I know that is not much in relation to the amount I could spend to high end equipment. But it is a start

Is there any shop in Melbourne and surrounding which you can recommend? Or does any one of you live next to Melbourne and wants to sell some old gear. Or is even renting possible?

Anyway I am lucky I found this place, looks like a nice community!

Cheers Roman

Welcome to PA Roman. The best shop in Melbourne is probably Miners Den in Mitcham, but I'm not sure what you could buy for $250 and depends whether you're after gold or relics. There's plenty of very knowledgeable folk on this forum to advise though. Best wishes for detecting around this "most liveable city".

Thanks for your welcome!

I got a second hand detector from gumtree and I hope it will arive soon. Due to my bugdet is limited I got a Garrett Euro ACE, which is the same like the 350. If It is here I will tell you how it is going ...

For the start do you have any recommendations where I can get a cheap sand scoope, prefered with a long handle and a short digging tool/ sod cutter? Should just be cheap ...
