Gday people,
Based in Maitland in the hunter valley.
Always been keen to buy a metal detector and have a look about but I just never got around to it, but these days my 12yr old son has a crazy fascination with gold and has been pestering me to get a detector, so here I am hoping to learn a bit from you fine people in the hope I don't waste to much money on equipment.
I know less than nothing about prospecting and geology etc, so its gonna be a steep learning curve.

Cheers.

Hi Jaksdad.

Welcome to PA. It's a great hobby to get into with your son. There are plenty of members in the Hunter. Even some in Maitland. ;)
You will find plenty of info on the forum to help you out. If you can't find what you are after just ask.

Cheers

Ramjet.

Yeah, its a bit daunting when you don't know anything about them.

I just want something to comb the beach with and pick around some big quartz deposits I know of.

Stick with one of the big names. Minelab, Garrett..... there are others but those are the big 2. I always say to spend as much as you can because EVERYONE wants to upgrade. X terra 705 are very popular. Garrett At Pro is another.

Gday Jaksdad, welcome aboard.
Any activity you get to do with your son will be very rewarding.
Check out our young mate 'Lonely Silver' and his youtube videos 'digging australia' ...very inspirational... Your boy will be keen to follow in his footsteps for sure
Have a look through some other threads ... Theres a few of us here local

About time we did a hunter group hunt, just trying to think of a suitable place, that about 8 or so, of us could hit. Ramjet, and Jacob would get some good video as well. Edit: just thought of the perfect place.

Hi mate, I've bought my daughters 2 detectors no more than $30 each which work great for coins in tambarked parks and sand pits for them.
All metal detectors detect metal. Some just won't detect gold or certain sizes / depth.

If you don't want him digging rusty nails you will need a detector with a 'discriminator' setting / mode, this will eliminate iron signals and mostly alloy, gold, silver, lead get detected only then. Price will go up with depth and settings.

I'd personally see if those cheap k-mart ones have a discriminator..if not I'd look into the more expensive ones around a couple of hundred.

I found lots and lots with cheap detectors at the start and still do.

Even an old 1980s VLF detector like a Coinmaster, Compass, Deep Seeker brands etc all still work great for finding coins..relics..and some, gold.

My older vlfs dont pick up gold very well, even if I wave it under the coil.

If you want gold as well... start looking above $500-900 worth and there's many choices there like Ramjet stated

Make sure you get a detecter thats good in hot ground as the quartz up where your talking about is real hot whence why im undecided on a detecter but i think im leaning towards the spp.... If you want to hunt coins a cheap vlf but up at fossickers youll want something suited to that type of land

Thanks for the reply's and info guys.
I'm sure my son and I would be keen to tag along on a group outing.
