Nervous time in Yamba

The van's all packed and both cars are loaded in readiness. The fire from Shark Creek has been singeing the paintwork of Wooloweyah and Angourie homes and has jumped the towns and is now only about 2km from here. A change is expected early tomorrow which will fan it this way and we can only hope that the firies won't be too knackered to fight it. They have been tireless and we are extremely grateful for their efforts, but they can only do so much.

Anyway, tomorrow will find us either at home safe and sound or camped out waiting nervously.

Mate if the predictions are what you say and you have sorted your gear don't waste time if it's within that distance do the smart thing and leave now. Fire behaviour is a fine line to play the waiting game with and without notice can intensify or at best turn the other way. Seriously get out now if you don't have the skills, experience or equipment to defend yourself and your belongings life is more important than material things.

Thanks for all of your good wishes folks. We didnt need to evacuate but would have if asked to. The wind did pick up and was gusting between 50 ~ 60kph towards us but the continuous fire bombing must have prevented the flaring and the fire was stopped just out of town. I doubt that the land based firies could have stopped the fire spreading on their own as there is no road access and its swampy ground.

We seem to associate Australian bushfires with intense heatwaves but it was quite ironical that it was actually damn cold which of course was a blessing. Now to unpack and think about my next trip
