Good Evening Salutations Fellow Prospectors

It has come that time whereby my youngest and, to that my eldest son have taken interest in prospecting. So at Christmas as we are heading to Nowra for a couple of weeks on the beach, and a couple of weeks ago I took the Nerriga shortcut through Oallen, I though I would take them, as the youngest in 8, high banking to introduce them to it. Now I have spent most of my time, in medium scale placer and hard rock mining, which at the youngest's age is a little dangerous, but never really with high bankers. On Saturday arvo I knocked this unit up in the workshop. But alas gaps in my knowledge base are arising.
So my question to my fellow prospectors is.

1. Oallen Ford, still producing?, I think a few years ago crews were still getting some pretty good results out of there.

2. We spent a couple of hours saturday afternoon, folding and bending up a high banker, don t really play with them, so worked a lot of memory. So any comments on improvements for her, also was playing with the ideal of feeding her with a honda wx pump, or do you guys recon that I will need to run a 5hp 2 " pump. Her specs are

Sluice fall, 1:6
Width 400
Length 2400
Rifle height 40
Rifle angle 35deg
Moss 3m no woven

Was going to run a continuous 2" din pipe under fold in hopper, with a grisly, was thinking 5-8 mm free space.

1.Do I run moss the full length, even under grissly, like this

2.Do we run it from this point, and put a sheet of standard insertion rubber over the bare aluminium under the grissly.

3. Any other suggestion.

In anticipation of the replies, thank you

Nice lookin bit of gear there village , I personally hav not been to oallen as of yet so I cannot help u with that one.... as for pump a wx 15 should handle that easily, there are cheaper alternatives but I prefer to spend a bit more to get the reliability with it.. hope that helps. :)

oh! wow!

you call that "knocked up" - can i have your mobile number??

Personally I'd call it a sluice and not a High Banker only 'cos it has a hopper box and you would be best to feed this beast already classified material otherwise it wont clear itself - if you know what i mean...

nice work 8)

does the nomad matting have backing behind it ?
if not put ribbed vee matting underneath otherwise the fine gold will wash right out the end going underneath the mat

i think your riffles are too close together , maybe 90 mm spacing is better ( i tried those myself and after 11 field tests and modifications i went to lower riffles , fewer of them and wider spacing

you dont need that many riffles , they will cause loss of momentum of the water and the riffles will clog up

you need a classifier under the feed shute to separate the oversize rock

if your going to work oallen you would use a grizzly screen to classify it with around 5 mm spacing gaps / holes , other locations you might like using bigger grizzly spacing up to 10 - 13 mm

give yourself some adjustment scope in the support legs in case you find it works better with steeper angle 15 - 22 degrees at a guess for that one , maybe cut some of the riffles lower in height and field test it , see which ones block up and which clear out , retaining just a little heavy material in the gaps between each riffle is ideal

google search images of highbankers you will see how most people do it or watch some youtube videos

400 mm wide sluice will probably need water flow of 300 - 320 litres / min

WX 15 pumps put out only 240 litres/min on full revs

you do have a good starting point for a highbanker .

good luck out there and thanks for coming to say hello :)

Give me the dates you are thinking of going to Oallen over Xmas and I will meet you up there with cactus and give you some tips
We just did 4 days on Oallen with great results
Cheers Mud Guts :D

I am no expert but from my research and some experiance using my banker, your sluice box looks like one from a dredge. Too many riffles that will need heaps of water flow. They recomend the space betwen the riffles about 5 times the height of the riffle. Otherways the gold will not have enough space to drop out. See link.

Most bankers use combination of expended metal/bread crate and riffles to recover small gold. You definately need some rubber v-matt under the miner moss if its not backed. I always find gold stuck in it that I would probably blew out of the sluice otherways.
Most prospectors will recomend to leave the space under the hopper with nothing on, just bare metal so I would not put the carpet there.
Great looking beast mate. Good luck with it. :)

G day mud guts

Umm, should get there on the 24 th dec and staying to 6 th. Going to try to get three two day seasons. Would appreciate your help, you tell me what date or dates suit you.

G day gas per

Yeah I have to cut the opening for grissly in the back to allow quick cleaning, I have made the grissly out of 50 x 4 ally, set up for variable pitch, for Oallen I was going to allow a 5 to 8 mm gap. The bar will stick out a slot in the end with an 80 mm gap to allow a shovel into the hopper, to push oversized material out of the hopper quickly.

Two points i've read, underflow ..ie gold slipping under the mat .....will loose gold blowing under the mat with no backing, and 2, leave it bare aluminium under the grizzly for a good distance....and create a stopper bar at the start of the moss. Apparently small gold clings to the aluminium as it slides down whereas matting will make it bounce and again blow out as opposed to being caught. Only theory ive read. Riffles look too close together.
