I am very keen to start detecting as will be reducing my work hours shortly. I live down on the coast near Geelong and would like to start on the beaches before heading to Stieglitz and Ballarat down the track. I have a budget of between $1000 - $1500 and have been researching the Minelab Eureka Gold as an option. Any suggestion appreciated.

if you can save up a little more and get the 3030
you will have greater luck down the beach
as for the gold fields all detectors will pick up gold but for best results the (GPX) PI's are best.

Welcome to the forum Richard, great hobby you're about to get in to. There is quite a lot of info regarding the different detector options under the detector section of the forum, and some of the advice in this section may help in your decision.

I have a mate with a Eureka Gold and he has done quite well with it up in the Hill End region. Best of luck and look forward to sharing your adventures,

Cheers Wal, :)

Should be able to get a sd 2100 or 2200 for that price range. Not the best for the beach but great on gold.

G'day Richard, welcome to the forum.

I have a Eureka Gold. Haven't managed to find any gold with it yet but it has picked up a lot of trash in the bush, as well as coins and stuff in the local parks. I haven't tried it at the beach yet, but I think as long as you work in the dry sand you should be fine.

I did a review on the Eureka Gold you can read here:

I hope this helps in your decision :)

Many thanks for all the help.

I must admit I thought this was all pretty straight forward but the more I read and research the more confused I become. I do like the reviews for the 3030 and think that it will suit my location and my short term adventures.

Just one other question. Do most people purchase their detectors on line or in person?

Appreciate all the help to date.

The Eureka has discrimination - handy for in the parks. I don't use it for gold. Not trying to convince you to get one Richard, just sayin. I think the 3030 is a pretty good choice, it does have a lot of good reviews.
