navy button identification

Hi Guys
I have been sitting on this button for a few weeks.
At first thought it was a ww2 military navy button (Which it still could be)
But after looking at navy buttons from the 1800's im finding them to be more matching this description.
Any ideas?
Find near the sea approx 7 inches deep

Correct me if I am wrong, but from memory it looks like a merchant navy button, had a few posted previously.
