Hi all!

I have found myself browsing around here and thought I'd introduce myself and hopefully get some local tips.

My wife and I have two young boys, almost 7y and 2.5y. We are starting to do a little more camping, and have invested in a good quality (hopefully!) tent and some more gear. Also my old Subaru WRX was replaced with an old Land Rover, which helps (I'm a sucker for English cars). We like spending time in Steiglitz. I always thought it might be fun to try panning.

My eldest son and I have been watching Gold Rush Alaska and he told me he wants to be a gold miner! I thought now is a good time to start researching about where and how to find gold, and incorporate that with our camping.

Since browsing, it seems that Steiglitz and surrounding areas might be out of bounds for prospecting. It seems that Morrisons might be the next closest option.

Time to do some more reading and buy a few pans I think?

Welcome to the forum poeee. Great stage in life to start taking the family out into the great outdoors with an interesting hobby. Kids can get pretty excited when gold flakes show up in the pan, and the attention span expands dramatically. Actually, the same can be said for us "Big Kids".

Hope the forum answers many questions you may have, and hope to share the enjoyment this prospecting caper has to offer.

Best of luck out there on the streams.

Wal.

You can do the following in the Steiglitz Park - see link http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/steiglitz-historic-park

"Gold panning is permitted only in the section one kilometre downstream from the Meredith Road Bridge on Sutherlands Creek. Prospectors with a miners right are permitted to use pans, cradles and hand tools within the creek bed only. Please protect the creek bank environment."

You will need a Miners Right, but not for the kids.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy it.

Found an interesting reference to an old Thos Wahbourne stereoview showing Steiglitz in its prime
